About My Book:
Mark's Trail

For years, I’ve been running from a book I was terrified to finish. Writing about my father’s suicide meant reliving the hardest day of my life over and over again. But I realized that the “Invisible Inheritance” of mental illness only grows in the dark. It’s time to bring it into the light.

Mark’s Trail is here! Buy it on Amazon!

It’s the story of “The Candy Man”, my biggest encourager, a small-town legend, and a man who fought a silent war for 68 years. It’s a journey through his secret journals and the survival guide I’ve built to help others avoid the same dark ending.

If you’ve ever felt “broken down,” if you’re a survivor of loss, or if you’re just looking for a reason to keep walking, this book is for you.

Let’s stop keeping our stories silent. Let’s start walking together on this trail we call life.

I’ll see you on the trail! 🌲✨

Review of Mark’s Trail

This is a beautifully written book. I know and love this family and yet had no idea of the daily challenges they went through. It just goes to prove that you never know what someone is going through therefore we should always be a shining light to those we come in contact with daily. Just a smile or a kind word means more than we will ever know. This book is filled with the raw truth of mental illness and the difficult journey of the person going through it as well as the people who love them. Each page is lined with love and a deep desire to help others in their journey whether it is the individual themselves or the love ones that surround them. Monica Gruenwald Pate, your parents would be so proud of you. I know I am! Well done!

Beautiful. He’d be so proud of you !

This was both a beautiful and heartbreaking tribute to Mark. I didn’t know him well but he was always so kind and quick with a piece of candy! This is a beautiful forensic analysis of a fragile mind and how it worked. What formed its framework. It Will make me look at many people (and myself) through a different lens and give more grace and kindness. Be an encourager and try to never be discouraging. Tall order!!

Beautifully written trail guide

Mark's Trail is so much more than a memoir—it's a beautiful tribute to an incredible man, a daughter's unwavering love for her father, and a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play in recognizing and helping those who may be silently struggling.Having known and loved Mark for many years, this book touched me in ways I can't fully put into words. Mark was like family to me. He was kind, generous, and the type of person who genuinely cared about everyone around him and loved freely. He made people feel welcome and valued, and his presence brought comfort to so many. Losing him to suicide was one of the most heartbreaking experiences our community has ever faced. Like so many others, I've often wished I had known what he was carrying inside or what more I could have done.Monica writes with such honesty, compassion, and courage. She beautifully honors her father. What makes this book especially meaningful is that it doesn't stop at telling Mark's story. It challenges all of us to become more aware of the silent battles people may be facing and encourages us to have the courage to reach out, ask difficult questions, and let others know they are not alone. If this book helps even one person recognize the signs of someone in crisis—or gives one person the hope to keep going—then Mark's legacy will continue changing lives in the most profound way.Thank you, Monica, for sharing your family's story with such grace and vulnerability. You have honored your dad in a way that will educate, inspire, and give hope to countless readers. Mark's life mattered, and because of this book, his compassion, his spirit, and his story will continue to make a difference for years to come. This is a book everyone should read—not only to remember an extraordinary man, but to learn how we can better love, support, and truly see one another. It has the power to open hearts, start important conversations, and, I believe, save lives.

You are never alone!

As someone who has struggled my own path of depression and who has family that struggles/struggled with mental health issues, manic episodes and depression. A loved one who has experienced what it feels like to be “the anchor” that helps the love one continue walking the trail, even when it’s hard, this book truly resonates with me.This book highlights major events in her father’s life, the everyday life, the struggles, the grief, but it highlights the good that her father achieved and instilled in her and her family.Monica, I know it took some much strength and courage to write this book and healing in your own time, but I want to say THANK YOU for speaking of the internal silent battles that your father fought. Thank you for being brave and sharing your father’s story, his legacy, and walking us through his trail and holding our hand through it.If you are a loved one to someone who struggles mentally, or you have internal struggles and battles you fight everyday, please grab this guide as Monica walks you through each step, each chapter, hand in hand, with strength to continue the trail.

Beautiful Tribute, Heartbreaking Story

A true testament of the struggles many people endure with mental health. Monica did a beautiful job at walking us through the hardships her father faced and showcasing how mental health can shape a person without us even knowing. This book is an amazing tribute, whether you or a family or friend have struggled with mental health, this is a great way to see the perspective through someone else’s eyes. Thank you Monica for sharing this story.

More Than a Book, A Lifeline

Some trails are wide, clear, and beautifully lit. Others are steep, rocky, lonely, and so dark you wonder if you’ll ever find your way again. I know that trail because I have walked it. As a survivor of suicide, this book spoke to parts of my heart that very few people ever truly understand. Monica doesn’t write from a place of theory. She writes with compassion, honesty, and the kind of wisdom that only comes from someone who has chosen to walk beside others when the road gets hard. Mark’s Trail is not just about mental illness. It’s about hope. It’s about choosing one more step when you don’t think you can. It’s about finding strength you didn’t know you had and allowing good people to help carry you when your legs are too tired to keep going. The title couldn’t be more fitting because life isn’t always a smooth path. Some trails are filled with rocks, unexpected turns, and moments where you lose sight of the destination. But with courage, faith, and people who refuse to give up on you, those trails can still lead somewhere beautiful. Monica, I am so incredibly proud of you. I know this book wasn’t easy to write. It took tremendous courage, vulnerability, and sheer will to put these words on paper. You chose to turn pain into purpose, and that is one of the greatest gifts a person can give. My hope is that this book reaches every person who feels lost on their own trail and reminds them that they are never truly walking alone. Thank you for having the courage to shine a light for the rest of us. Your voice matters, your story matters, and I have no doubt this book will help save lives.

There is hope

Mark’s Trail is one of the most courageous, heartbreaking, and hope-filled books I have ever read.Rather than allowing Mark’s story to end with his death by suicide, his daughter lovingly uses his journals to give him a voice. Through his own words and her perspective as a suicide loss survivor, she shares not only the pain that mental illness can bring, but also the lasting impact it has on an entire family. Their story is deeply personal, honest, and incredibly moving. This book is more than a memoir—it is a resource. It offers understanding for those living with mental illness, insight for families who may not know how to help, and encouragement to those grieving the unimaginable loss of someone they love. It reminds us that behind every smile may be a silent battle and that compassion, conversation, and support matter. What touched me most was how Mark’s family chose to transform unimaginable heartbreak into hope. Instead of allowing his story to be defined solely by tragedy, they are using it to educate others, reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, and point people toward resources that can save lives. That is a remarkable legacy. If this book reaches even one person who is struggling or helps one family recognize the signs and start a difficult conversation, it has accomplished something extraordinary. Please don’t suffer in silence. Speak your truth. Reach out for help. Let someone walk alongside you. There is hope, there are resources, and there are people who care.Mark’s Trail is a powerful reminder that every life has value, every story matters, and every conversation about mental health has the potential to change—or even save—a life. I highly recommend this book.

GET. THIS. BOOK. An Important Conversation, a Daughter's Love, and a Beautiful Tribute!

WOW! This book is so beautiful, honest, and real.As someone who has watched a parent navigate bipolar disorder and schizophrenia for most of my life, I deeply appreciated Monica's willingness to tell her family's story. Books like this matter because they give voice to experiences that so many families quietly carry.Monica has written a courageous, heartfelt, and **deeply compassionate** book that shines a light on one of the most important conversations we can have. Her father's story reminds us that mental illness doesn't define a person's worth -- and that behind every struggle is someone who deserves to be seen, understood, and loved. What I appreciated most were the unique elements woven throughout the book. The **Trail Reflections** invited me to pause and process what I had just read, and the authentic journal entries gave readers a rare glimpse into the thoughts and emotions of someone silently battling mental illness. I also loved seeing the family photos woven throughout the book and reading Monica's honest reflections. Together, they made the story feel deeply personal and beautifully connected.I truly believe this is a book that will start meaningful conversations and help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. It's a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, **hope can still light the trail forward.**Congratulations, Monica, on writing a book that will touch lives and make a lasting difference for decades to come.

About Monica G. Pate

Executive Leader | Author | Advocate for Resilience

With over 25 years of executive leadership experience, Monica Pate has built a career on the belief that the strongest teams are forged through empathy, inclusion, and a positive leadership style. As a high-performance executive, she specializes in driving sustainable results by fostering deeply engaged, empowered cultures that center around connection.

In 2020, Monica’s personal trail took an unexpected turn when she lost her father to suicide. In the wake of that “whirlwind,” she transformed her grief into a global mission for mental wellness and suicide awareness.

Her first book, Mark’s Trail: A Survival Guide for Navigating Mental Illness, released in 2026. In it, she distills her father’s private journals into a survival map for others navigating the dark woods of mental illness — for the ones living with it, and for the families walking beside them. Monica narrated the audiobook herself.

Through You Got This Motivation, LLC, Monica works with organizations and individuals who are ready to talk honestly about what people carry. She delivers keynote addresses on resilience, mental wellness, and suicide awareness; leads team-building sessions for workplaces that want more than a poster in the break room; coaches one-on-one; and teaches outdoors on the very trail her mother’s legacy built. Her audiences include corporate teams and employee resource groups, schools and counseling staff, churches, and community organizations.

How I Work

Resilience Systems for Leadership and Life

My work is grounded in systems: decision frameworks, communication rhythms, and personal strategies that hold steady when things get hard. It lives in the space between heavy and corporate, offering clear and practical guidance you can put into action right away.

A Sanctuary for Learning, Wellness, and Community

The Brenda Gruenewald Trail of Encouragement

Brenda Gruenewald dedicated over 25 years of her life to the students of Georgiana School and the heart of the Butler County School System. She was a woman defined by her passions: a deep love for the outdoors and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Today, that legacy lives on through the Brenda Gruenewald Trail of Encouragement.

Spanning one mile adjacent to Georgiana School, this nature trail is more than just a path through the pines — it is a vital resource for our community. Led by the dedicated efforts of the school administration and our community partners, the trail serves as a living classroom where students and the general public can experience the profound connection between physical exercise and mental wellness.

The Outdoor Classroom Is Open

This year, the outdoor classroom was completed — and it went straight to work. On Earth Day, You Got This Motivation hosted the first outdoor classes on the trail. Four hundred students, from Pre-K through seniors, spent the day learning under the pines rather than under fluorescent lights. A kindergartener
and a graduating senior walked the same path on the same day, which is exactly the kind of thing Brenda would have
loved.
